Movie Diary for 2018

Jan 7 Tara Theatre

Went to see The Darkest Hour on a dark chilly Sunday afternoon. Interesting to see the homogenous crowd of well lived humans who attend at such an hour. Last time I had gone to see a movie was Thanksgiving of 2016 when visiting my niece Kara and her husband Andrew. We saw Allied starring Pitt and Cotillard.

Wanted to see this film about Churchill not only because of my interest in him and the era, but also because Joe Wright directs gorgeous films worthy of being seen on the big screen. Absolutely loved his Atonement and Pride and Prejudice - and such taste! - two of my favorite authors and the luminous Keira Knightly.

Ok, back to Gary Oldman ... bravo!!! Kristin Scott Thomas was impeccable. As thrilling as the events were, the real drama and tension were played out in watching the intimate details of Churchill's thoughts (yes, it was as if you could see and hear them) and conversations. It is an interior film and probably will be just as good on a small screen as in a theatre. My favorite scene was the subway. There were tears during the last speech.

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

There were many wins and losses during the days depicted - some small (seeming almost petty) for the "team" of rivals trying to govern ... which writ largely for those acting upon them. Life. See it!

Ready Player One at Midtown Arts Cinema on Saturday March 31 at 4pm with fellow movie lover Suzanne

Spielberg appears to love searching for a young version of himself when introducing actors. The avatar version of the characters did not disappoint, but the human versions seemed paper thin. Also, his villains were one dimensional and dull.

Not quite the comeback, kid.
